techn. Update

Even if I still haven’t got the time to start blogging about some interessting things, I’d like to give you a short update.
A couple of days ago there was a small change in the technical part of my blog: Ich changed the wordpress plug-in for multilanguage support. Now it’s a lot easier for me to just write a few lines in more than just one language – and additionally to that everybody can see in which languages a post exists.
I’ve been looking for a plug-in that I can use so easily for quite some time – maybe this is the reason why I’m so glad I found jLanguage.

Going bilingual.

One thing I’d liked to start for the last couple of months was writing my blog in German and English.
Right now I’m still sort of testing how to do it best. There are a couple of wordpress plugins that seem to offer some sort of multilanguage support – but until today I neither had the time for this sort of thing nor found any of the plugins’ decriptions convincing enough to give them a try. Gengo might by now be approriate to my needs and as it’s compatible with the current wordpress version I decided to just try it. What’s allready working: You get displayed the postings in the language according to your browser’s configuration (at the moment either English or German) or in the blog’s default language (English). Maybe I’ll start trying out some more gimmicks in the next few days.
So stay tuned and (maybe) enjoy my blog in German and English from now on.

[Update: 2007-07-20] I recently found out about jLanguage and I think it’s a great plug-in, so I switched from gengo. I think it’s the perfect solution for my needs, as it just offers what I was looking for: A very simple way of providing multi language support! And it even has got those tiny flags out of the box! I’m impressed :-) so I can only recommend jLanguage.

Relaunch!

I’ve decided to just switch to my WordPress installation, no matter if it’s already 100% the way I’d like it to be… it’s still better than the old website. And it will develop – I hope, as the WordPress-theme is not customized yet, there’s still no picture gallery included and there are some other small aspects I’d like to change, like enabling the function for writing comments. And I need your help: I started the “Quote of the day” section :-) This means that all of you have to support me by saying notable things… Thank you Markus and Tina for being the first two to be quoted. In the Links section I started to collect other Erasmus students’ blogs. If you’d like to see your own website mentioned here just send me an e-mail. (But keep in mind: there are only ten links shown at the same time although my list is longer)

By now the “tentaveckan” is over and we’ve been able to switch back to the normal again – like going to the “tentavallen”. I think Tina has perfectly described what this party was like – so enjoy her blog about tentavallen.

On Monday my Swedish II course at the folksuniversitetet started – and I had to discover how much of my Swedish I’ve already forgotten. So this is a very good preparation for my trip with sjutjugo, and with the weather getting colder at the moment I somehow start to enjoy the thought of going to the alps for skiing! With half of the winter semester already gone I start to realize that again time is running! In only two and a half months I already will be in Aachen again, and I think I need to see a lot more of Sweden in the remaining time – so this weekend I start with visiting Stockholm and for the next weekend there’s a trip to Oslo planed, which means that there will be at least two more reasons for a picture gallery!

Finally an update

After quite a long time, there’s the promised update of my blog! Or to be honest: It’s more a complete relaunch. After reading all the other blogs I felt like I really (rrrreally rrrreally rrrreally!) need to do a relaunch of my site NOW! There has been so much going on the last two months without any updates on my site! This really needed to be changed! Maybe I’ll find the time to fill in the missing posts of August and September, so stay tuned.

Technically there have been major changes as well. The blog started in July with an “out-of-the-box” solution of my webhoster. Then I started first to try to install a mediawiki, moved on to Joomla and now finally I have chosen WordPress. The “out-of-the-box” solution was just for getting started and had several major flaws that made me want to try other things. Mediawiki didn’t run due to memory limitations of the server (and my webhoster wasn’t able to change this) and with Joomla I wasn’t happy because it was too complicated for my needs. Now I’m going to give WordPress a try. And because I don’t feel like changing the software too soon again, we’ll see how I like WordPress the next months… But as you can see right now there are still one tousand small things to fix before I’m satisfied.

The next few days I’m going to put the “old” posts online again and then switch off the “old website” as soon as I’ve found a simple photo-gallery for WordPress. Just that much as a teaser: I’ve already taken more than 1000 photos.

Only a short update + Canoe weekend

Only a short update this time because I’ve spend way too much time in front of my laptop installing a mediawiki ;-) Soon I’ll tell you more about this – but let’s say it like this: There will be LIUwiki quite soon!

The weekend was great – we’ve been canoing with perfekt weather and it’s been just great. As soon as I add the canoe trip-photos to the photos section you’ll all understand what I’m talking about.

Update – 2006-09: As you all have noticed – there’s no wiki, as I moved on to WordPress. There were too many problems that prevented me from getting mediawiki to work.
